What is a Duodenal Switch?
If you are extremely obese and have tried numerous times to get your weight under control without success, your healthcare provider may recommend a bariatric surgical procedure known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS). This is commonly known as the duodenal switch.
Am I a good Candidate?
To be a candidate, you must be morbidly obese or super obese (have a BMI greater than 50) and be healthy enough to tolerate surgery. Those who have comorbid conditions, like diabetes, are good candidates as well.
How is Duodenal Switch done?
Step 1: Several half-inch incisions in the stomach and mid-abdomen are made. A portion of the stomach is removed, leaving it connected to the duodenum, which is then separated from the rest of the small intestine.
Step 2: The duodenum is then attached to the lowest part of the small intestine, bypassing the majority of the second and third segments of the small intestine.
Step 3: The surgeon determines that there are no areas that are leaking, and then the instruments are withdrawn and the incisions are closed, typically with absorbable sutures or sterile tape.
What is the Recovery after Duodenal Switch like?
You would stay at the hospital for 3-4 days after Duodenal Switch surgery under medical supervision if you choose to undergo SIPS in India. You would need around a week to recover and would stay for around 2 weeks in India to make sure you’re on the right healing path before you go back to your own country. Patients are generally able to return to work within 2-3 weeks. Certain activities may be restricted for up to 6 weeks.
Even after this recovery time, there is ongoing recovery due to the need for serious lifestyle changes and changes in eating habits.
The healing process will occur throughout the new diet plan. For the first month following duodenal switch surgery, the patient’s stomach will only be able to have liquids or soft foods. A dietician will work with DS patients in order to devise both a diet plan and a supplement plan.
What Results Can I Expect from Duodenal Switch?
Duodenal switch surgery has excellent results, with the average patient losing 70 to 80% of his excess weight in the two years that follow the procedure.
Long-term, most patients who choose this type of surgery end up with lasting results. In addition, patients are able to eat substantially larger portions than those who have other types of restrictive weight loss surgeries, allowing for greater patient satisfaction.
