What is Ovarian Cysts Removal Surgery?
An ovarian cyst is a sac that occurs on or within one of the ovaries and is filled with fluid or semisolid material. The ovaries are tiny pelvic structures that produce female hormones and store egg cells.
Cysts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with the majority of them being harmless (benign). Ovarian cysts are caused by a variety of factors that are unknown.
Some cysts are so little that they don’t create any symptoms. You may not even be aware that you have a cyst in these circumstances. Cysts that are larger may cause the following symptoms:
When is Ovarian Cysts Removal required?
Your surgeon may suggest ovarian cystectomy in the following cases:
- Cyst is larger than 7.6 cm
- Not a functional cyst
- Cyst continues to grow
- Cyst does not resolve within two to three menstrual cycles
- Presence of pain or other symptoms
- Exclusion of ovarian cancer
- Cysts in both ovaries
- Ovarian cysts present in:
- Menarchal adolescents and adults
- Post-menopausal women
- Those using birth control pills
How is Ovarian Cysts Removal done?
Laparoscopic Ovarian Cyst Removal:
Step 1: Just below the navel, a tiny incision will be created. A laparoscope will be implanted after that. A camera is attached at the end of a narrow tube. Carbon dioxide gas will be poured into the belly to help the doctor see the organs better.
Step 2: The cyst will be located using a laparoscope. One or two further incisions will be made once it has been discovered. The cyst will be removed using surgical equipment. It is possible to extract tissue for testing purposes.
Step 3: Both ovaries may need to be removed if malignancy is discovered. The instruments will be removed when the cyst has been excised. Stitches or staples will be used to close the incision.
Open Surgery (Laparotomy) for Ovarian Cyst Removal:
Step 1: An abdominal incision will be made. The abdomen will be opened and the abdominal muscles will be separated.
Step 2: The cyst will then be removed in the second step. A sample of tissue may be taken for testing in some instances. If malignancy is discovered, one or both ovaries may be removed (if cysts are identified on both ovaries).
Step 3: Finally, the abdominal muscles will be sewn together using stitches. Stitches or staples will be used to close the incision.
What is the Recovery after Ovarian Cysts Removal like?
Most women feel better within the first week after surgery; nevertheless, for a few weeks, do not lift, push, or pull any heavy objects. Do not resume sexual activity until your doctor gives you the okay. Internal healing takes four to six weeks to complete.
What Results Can I Expect from Ovarian Cysts Removal?
Because the vast majority of ovarian cysts and masses in premenopausal women are benign, laparoscopy is an excellent treatment choice for many of them. Patients can avoid huge, open incisions using minimally invasive ovarian cystectomy techniques.
