What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is one of the best and most popular weight loss surgery procedures which works by resecting a major portion of the stomach by creating a “sleeve” or banana-shaped pouch without disrupting normal connections with the esophagus and small intestine. Contrary to other bariatric procedures, the gastric sleeve does not cause a change in the order of the digestive system, the result of which is lower complication rates and less malabsorption with fast recovery. It works by limiting the amount of food that can be consumed.
Surgery Information
| Procedure Time | 1-2 Hours |
| Anesthesia Type | General Anesthesia |
|---|---|
| Hospitalization | 2-3 Days |
| Stitch Removal | 7 Days |
| Recovery Time | 7-10 Days |
Am I a Good Candidate?
You are a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery if you are more than 100 pounds above your ideal body weight and/ or have a BMI of 40 or above or are 80 pounds overweight and have obesity-related problems such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.
How is Gastric Sleeve Surgery done?
Step 1: The procedure is done laparoscopically. Two to five small incisions are made on the abdomen to pass the instruments into the abdomen.
Step 2: A sleeve is created by removing around 3/4th of the stomach. The remaining stomach is stapled using surgical staples.
What is the Recovery after Gastric Sleeve Surgery like?
If you have chosen to undergo gastric sleeve surgery in India, you would stay at the hospital for 2-3 days after the procedure to monitor your recovery. You may feel some discomfort after the procedure, which would be taken care of with medications. The surgeon and dietician will give you a diet regimen starting with instructions for sipping plain water, which needs to be followed properly for smooth recovery. Typically, it’ll be about a week to ten days before you can go back to work, and about a month to six weeks before you can start exercising again.
What Results Can I Expect from Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Most patients can expect to lose 60 to 80% of their excess body weight over a 6 – 12 month period with gastric sleeve surgery.
