What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer – the abnormal growth of skin cells – most often develops on skin exposed to the sun. But this common form of cancer can also occur on areas of your skin not ordinarily exposed to sunlight.
There are three major types of skin cancer –
- Basal cell carcinoma: Basal cell carcinoma usually occurs in sun-exposed areas of your body, such as your neck or face.
- Squamous cell carcinoma: Most often, squamous cell carcinoma occurs on sun-exposed areas of your body, such as your face, ears and hands.
- Melanoma: Melanoma can develop anywhere on your body, in otherwise normal skin or in an existing mole that becomes cancerous.

Skin Cancer Treatment Options

Chemotherapy: Drugs are taken orally, applied topically, or injected with a needle or IV line to kill the cancer cells.
Photodynamic therapy: A laser light and drugs are used to destroy the cancer cells.
Radiation: High-powered energy beams are used to kill the cancer cells.
Biological therapy: Biological treatments are used to stimulate your immune system to fight the cancer cells.
Immunotherapy: A cream is applied to your skin to stimulate your immune system to kill the cancer cells.
How is Skin Cancer Treatment done?

After surgery, you may be prescribed antibiotics to help prevent infection.
The surgical site will be covered with a bandage before you leave. You should leave this bandage on for 24 to 48 hours. Your doctor will instruct you on when to remove the bandage and on the type of wound care you should use. Using ice packs is a common recommendation.
